The Old House at Cornu

An old house with a triangular gable decorated in fretwork stands at the centre of the canvas, a large plank gate beneath its porch and its roof partly collapsed, exposing the rafters. At the right a barn with a long roof extends towards the edge, and in front of it stands a wooden cart with large wheels, its spokes clearly drawn. The foreground yard is golden-ochre earth treated in broad strokes. The sky is a warm beige surface with a single bluish cloud above the roof. The colour is warm and almost monochrome, and the state of ruin is described without dramatisation.
