The Old House at Cornu
Casa veche la cornu
2005 · oil on canvas · 50 × 50 cm
A close framing of the porch of an old house: four brown wooden posts support a wide eave, and the tall hipped shingle roof fills the whole upper register. The rail, with its fretwork balusters, is lined with seven clay pots of red and pink geraniums, the only vivid accent in the picture. Behind the posts a curtained window can be glimpsed, and on either side stretch the whitewashed walls in cream, salmon pink and blue-grey. The light is warm and comes from the right; the paint is thick and smooth, and the whole work rests on the contrast between the red of the flowers and the limewash palette.
