A panoramic, almost monochrome work: a white hill rises left of centre like a snow crest cut into planes, its faces white and one side dark brown-violet, descending to the right. At its foot a barely sketched village can be read — white roofs, a house with a yellow metal roof — reduced to a few horizontal strokes. The foreground is a plain of grey-white snow, and the sky, filling the upper half, is a uniform grey surface without incident. The wide format and the absence of detail make the hill read as an object in its own right, set against a neutral ground.
