The House by the River / Tree (study 2)

A small white house with tall windows stands at the bottom of the canvas, almost hidden by a leafless tree whose black trunk and thin branches rise across the whole central register. Behind it the bank climbs in broad plates of ochre, cream, blue-grey and brown-violet applied with the knife, with a dark crest crossing the canvas. At the right a reddish-brown mass closes the composition. The sky is a thin grey-violet strip. The colour is cool and muted, and the white of the house — small against the mass of the hill — is the single point of light.
