Sunflower
Floarea soarelui

A green glazed clay vase with a rounded belly stands on a grey table and holds a bunch of sunflowers: some fifteen yellow heads, some turned towards the viewer, others twisted or drooping, with short petals and olive-brown centres. The thick stems and large dark green leaves cross untidily, and a few flowers already hang over the rim of the vase. The background is a neutral blue-grey applied in horizontal strokes, with no indication of space. The yellow is kept at a subdued intensity, close to ochre, and the interest falls on the rhythm of the discs and on the way each flower is turned differently.
