Blue Flowers

A squat clay jug stands on a brick-pink table and holds a bouquet that opens wide, almost to the edges of the canvas. The flowers — deep blue, ultramarine and white — are laid in short thick strokes, each petal remaining a distinct patch, while the long lance-shaped leaves fan out in blue-green and emerald. The ground is a cool grey-green worked in visible strokes that follow the direction of the bouquet, describing no particular wall. The paint is dense, with raised impasto on the flowers, and the contrast between the saturated blue and the surrounding grey carries the whole picture; the signature appears at the lower right.
