A stand of birches occupies the centre of the canvas: slender white trunks rise vertically from the grass, their sparse crowns painted in small patches of ochre and grey-green that let the sky show through. The foreground meadow is a smooth blue-green surface broken by long shadows; to the right a bank opens into bands of brick pink, ochre and dull violet. Behind, a line of bluish hills closes the horizon under a washed grey-white sky. The painting is made of short dotted strokes in thin paint — an even light with no direct sun, in which every colour is broken with white.
