The Old Car

Mașina veche

1980 · tempera / canvas · 70 × 55 cm

An old motor car, seen almost frontally, is broken into overlapping planes: the body becomes a series of golden-ochre rectangles, the bonnet a brown band, the cabin a row of windows drawn like those of a house. Below, two spoked wheels are left in white and black outline, like an unfinished sketch. The ground is grey-white and almost empty, with thin strokes that build no space and let the object float on the surface. The painting alternates opaque knife-laid paint with thinned areas where the canvas shows — the car is dismantled and reassembled rather than described.
