The Red Ravine

Râpa Roșie

1980 · oil on canvas · 82 × 96 cm

A frontal view of a ravine: its two banks, in brick brown and dull orange, fan downwards towards a pale vertical axis that cuts the canvas in half like a dry bed. Halfway up, a bluish-violet ridge and a mass of white and rusty impasto mark the lip of the ravine; above, the sky is a series of broad horizontal white and grey stripes with visible brushmarks. The paint is thick and gritty in the lower half, where it stands for layers of earth, and thin, almost rubbed away, in the sky. The colour stays within the earths — burnt ochre, brown, blue-grey — with no bright accent.
