Apples and Drape
Mere si draperie
2013 · oil on canvas · 37 × 42 cm
Nine apples are set in two rows on a grey-green table before a white drape falling in broad folds, painted in vertical strokes of white, blue-grey and ochre. The fruits alternate raw green, carmine red and yellow, each modelled with two or three thick strokes and a coloured shadow at its base; the short stalks are marked in black. At the left the drape gathers into a deep, almost black fold, and at the right a blue ground closes the composition. The contrast between the red-green of the fruit and the cool white of the cloth is the only subject; nothing distracts from it.
