A heavy-set man fills almost the whole canvas, seen frontally, arms folded on a table, his gaze directed out of the picture. The head is built from broad grey and ochre facets with a strongly marked jaw, and the brown shirt is a single nearly flat surface from which the large hands emerge, drawn in geometric planes. Behind him a grey-green second plane is populated by worker silhouettes reduced to contours and hatching, like a bas-relief. The upper ground is a band of warm ochre, the only light area; the paint is matte and rubbed, and the signature appears at the lower right.
