The Red Ravine

Râpa Roșie

1980 · oil on canvas · 100 × 108 cm

A second, larger and far darker version of the same motif: the mass of the ravine occupies the centre as an almost uniform deep-red wall, above which rises a dark blue hill with a rounded crest under a pale ochre sky. Set into the red wall is a trapezoidal golden-yellow block, the only bright passage in the picture. The foreground is an almost black zone furrowed by a few brown verticals that run down like streams. What holds the composition is the contrast between the warm red, laid on thickly, and the matte black below; detail is sacrificed to mass.
