A tree with a slender black trunk stands right of centre, its crown opening into a mass of blue-grey, olive green, white and orange accents applied in broad knife-laid slabs. At the left rises a second, darker clump, and at their base spreads a yellow-ochre plateau treated in horizontal strokes with a streak of brick red. The background is a blue crest, and the sky above is a pale blue-grey. A few thin verticals — posts or saplings — punctuate the foreground. The study pursues the relation between the vertical of the trunk and the horizontals of the ground.
