The Silver Forest
Pădurea de argint
1988 · oil on canvas · 54 × 64 cm
The canvas is filled entirely by a wood: dozens of vertical silvery-grey trunks line up across the whole width, while in the foreground a single thicker one opens into white branches that cross the picture like arms. The crowns above form a dense blue-black and green vault through which no sky is visible. The ground is a narrow brown-violet strip with almost no detail. The painting is made of parallel vertical strokes in thick paint — a texture that imitates bark and at the same time turns the wood into an almost decorative surface; the light seems to come from the whiteness of the trunks themselves rather than from outside.
