On a Drape

Pe o draperie

2013 · oil on canvas · 41 × 41 cm

A few thin, nearly leafless twigs lie on a crumpled white cloth occupying the centre of the canvas; the remaining leaves — crimson, cream yellow, green and brown — are painted one by one with firm contours and lighter undersides where they curl. The cloth is worked in broad strokes of white, blue-grey and ochre, its folds marked by cool shadows. The background is a dark, almost black green zone at the top, and below appear planks and violet patches. The composition is an open-air still life: fragile objects on a dense ground, the light coming from the white.
