Winter Landscape

A winter landscape in which snow fills the whole foreground: a broad grey-white road descends from the middle towards the bottom edge, with tracks left in thick paint and barely coloured bluish shadows. On the right a row of bushes and leafless saplings forms a warm band of ochre, rust and brown, the only chromatic accent; on the left an isolated bush with thin branches is silhouetted against the white. Behind, a dark blue and green wood closes like a wall, with a single lighter trunk at its centre, and the sky is a low grey strip. The paint is thick and knife-laid in the snow, thin in the wood; the light is even, that of a frosty overcast day.
