Landscape in the Doftana Valley
Peisaj la Valea Doftanei
1985 · oil on canvas · 65 × 73 cm
A high view over a valley: in the background a rounded blue-green massif rises almost to the top edge, with a dark crest and snow or rock suggested by vertical white strokes. Below it the slopes descend in steps of grey-green, pale ochre and white, cut by a few lighter rectangular plots like hayfields. The foreground is a run of yellow-green hill backs furrowed by long blue shadows. The picture is made of short strokes set side by side without blending, in dense paint; the light is diffuse, that of an overcast day, and space reads through the overlapping of planes rather than through linear perspective.
