The Doftana Valley

Valea Doftanei

1991 · oil on canvas · 70 × 98 cm

A mountain valley seen from water level: in the foreground the wide stony bed of a river spreads across the whole canvas, with ochre gravel banks and barely indicated threads of water. On the middle bank grow a few slender poplars with sparse rusty crowns, and beyond them the wooded hills close in a dense green-brown that fills the right side. The sky is a warm golden-ochre expanse laid in broad strokes and descending to the hill crest. A thin fence or parapet crosses the middle plane. The picture is muted, almost monochrome in brown-green, the paint thin and the light held in the sky rather than in the landscape.
