Acacias at Pietriceaua

Salcâmi la Pietriceaua

2002 · oil on canvas · 34 × 56 cm

A row of acacias crosses the canvas horizontally, with slender blackish-brown trunks and crowns built from patches of cobalt blue, silvery grey, white and crimson accents, laid in short strokes that let the ochre ground show between them. Below, the bank opens into large grey-white and cream slabs cut by bluish shadows, descending like steps towards the bottom edge. Two small white buildings appear at the right. The sky is a warm golden-ochre surface applied thinly. The cool-warm contrast — blue crowns against a golden sky — is the principal device of the work.
