Reflexe

2002 · oil on canvas, 51 × 65 cm

A stand of trees with silvery white crowns, painted in thick impasto, gathers in the upper part of the canvas against a golden-ochre ground standing in for the sky. Below, a streak of blue-grey water crosses the composition and takes up their reflection in fainter horizontal strokes. The foreground bank is a churned mass of crimson, violet and dark green, with white accents descending from the trees like threads of light. A few white houses can be made out at the right. The paint is thick and worked in every direction; the title states the point exactly — not the trees, but the way their light repeats in the water.
