Three pots — one brick, one blue-grey, one green — stand in a row on a sill or slab, filled with pansies: corollas in deep violet, purple, yellow and white with blue centres, each painted in two or three thick strokes with the characteristic markings at the centre. Dark green leaves gather between them. The background is a bluish-white surface applied in short strokes that describes nothing and lets the flowers come forward. The foreground is a grey strip. The composition is simple and almost frontal, and its richness lies entirely in the variety of the corollas.
