Spring Phantasm
Fantasma primăverii

A blossoming tree stands alone at the centre of the canvas, its round crown built from hundreds of thick patches of white, pink and raw green laid one over another with the knife, on a short brown-violet trunk. Around it the meadow spreads in bands of olive green, ochre and turquoise cut by streaks of crimson and blue marking furrows. At the right a cobalt mass, nearly abstract, closes the composition like an overturned hill. The sky is a clear light blue. This is the brightest work in the "phantasm" series — spring is given through white matter rather than through description.
