Autumn Phantasm
Fantasma toamnei
2013 · oil on canvas · 40.5 × 49.5 cm
A group of trees crosses the centre of the canvas, their crowns opening into large patches of orange, brick red, cobalt and grey-green, applied with the knife in broad overlapping slabs; slender dark trunks descend between them to an ochre bank. At the left a blue mass closes the composition; at the right the forms thin towards pink-grey ground. The sky, the upper third, is a light blue-grey in horizontal strokes. Autumn is suggested solely by the orange-blue chord, pushed to the point where the trees are no more than masses of colour.
