2002 · oil on canvas · 54 × 65 cm
A clump of cyclamen fills the centre of the canvas, with large round blue-green leaves overlapping like scales and five white flowers raised on slender stems above them; the upswept petals are painted in thick white with yellow centres. The background is divided between a deep churned blue at the upper left and areas of brick and crimson at the right and in the foreground, applied in broad strokes. There is no ground, sky or horizon — the plant is seen close to, as in an enlarged detail. The paint is smooth in the leaves and thicker in the flowers, and the white becomes the only source of light.
