A stand of willows occupies the centre of the canvas, their crowns all leaning the same way, to the left, as if in wind; the foliage is built from broad slabs of pale green, olive and blue-grey applied with the knife, with slender black branches slipping between them. At the base white and grey patches mark stones or remnants of snow. The foreground bank is a brown-violet strip, and below it appears ochre ground. The sky, the upper half, is a thick greenish-white surface almost without incident. The colour is muted and unified — a study in green broken with white.
