Pollarded willows stand in line in the middle plane, their thick brown-violet trunks throwing up slender black shoots; their crowns are broad masses of blue-grey, grey and olive green applied with the knife in overlapping plates. Below them the bank descends in bands of ochre, reddish brown and white with orange accents. At the left the ground opens into a paler zone. The sky is a thick grey-white surface. The matter is what counts most: every form is a slab of paint, and the trees are almost indistinguishably bound to the bank.
