Six pollarded willows stand in line in the foreground, their thick reddish-brown trunks modelled in vertical strokes, throwing up slender black shoots that rise across the whole upper register. Their crowns form a continuous mass of grey-green, white and ochre applied in broad slabs. Behind, an olive-green hill climbs to the right with sharply cut crests, and beneath the trees spreads a white band — snow or stones. The sky is a narrow blue-grey strip at the top. The rhythm of the verticals and the weight of the trunks give the work an almost sculptural character.
