A row of old houses lines a dirt road entering at the lower left: in the foreground a house with tall windows in brick-red frames and a large dark arched gateway leading into the yard; behind it two more houses with tiled roofs and low chimneys. A slender, sparsely leafed tree grows right in front of the gate. The walls are treated in warm tones of ochre, pink and cream, and the grass before them is an olive-green strip. The sky is a washed grey-white. The red of the windows and the gateway is the only strong accent.
