Phantasm of the crystal night
Fantasma nopții de cleștar
2002 · oil on canvas · 33 × 42 cm
The bank of a ravine occupies the whole middle of the canvas, broken into cream-white, blue and grey-violet plates laid over one another like scales; in the hollows the paint darkens to black. At left and right a few slender, almost leafless trunks mark the edges of the composition like bars. Behind, the ground rises in golden ochre and emerald towards a washed beige-blue sky. The foreground is a strip of bright red applied flat, describing nothing in particular but supporting the whole structure. The contrast of red, ochre and blue is pushed to the point where the landscape reads as a decorative surface.
