Phantasm 1
Fantasma 1
2002 · oil on canvas · 48.5 × 50.5 cm
A view seen vertically from above in which the water becomes the principal form: a cobalt-blue surface opens at the centre like a triangle and extends into emerald towards the right. Around it the banks break into plates of ochre, cream, crimson and grey-violet, cut by a sinuous black band that crosses the canvas horizontally. Below, a second dark blue sheet of water repeats the motif at smaller scale. The paint is thick, with broad strokes and passages dragged with the knife; the landscape is recognisable, but it has already been turned into a composition of patches — hence the title "phantasm".
