Phantasm at Cornu

Fantasmă la Cornu

A wide horizontal composition in which white and pink-grey hills line up across the full width of the canvas, their faces lit and their shadows blue. In front stand a few autumn trees, their crowns opening in golden ochre, brick red and blue on slender black trunks. At the foot of the hill a row of small white houses with red roofs can be read, and a white fence running to the right. The foreground is an almost empty cream-ochre slope. The sky is blue-grey with a crest of white cloud drawn with the tip of the brush. The colour is clear, without muddy mixtures; the forms are simplified but the arrangement remains classical, in three planes.
