Sunflower
Floarea soarelui

A large bunch of sunflowers fills almost the whole canvas: more than twenty bright orange heads, some open frontally, others seen from behind or drooping, their olive-brown centres marked by circular strokes. Thick stems and broad blue-green leaves cross below, and a few still-closed buds emerge from the mass like spheres. The ground is a warm blue-grey applied in vertical strokes, with an ochre passage at the upper right. The paint is thick, each petal a single movement of the brush; the orange is kept at full intensity and contrasts directly with the cool grey around it.
