Phantasm in the Basin

Fantasmă în bazin

2002 · oil on canvas · 60 × 92 cm

Against an almost uniform dark blue ground, a white-pink mass rises from the centre and narrows towards the top into a vertical column, like steam or a jet. At its base the paint opens into thick waves of white, pink and grey, with crimson hollows and black strokes marking stones in the water. The surrounding blue has no horizon and describes neither sky nor bank — it works as a continuous field in which the white form floats. The paint is the thickest in the whole series, raised in relief across the white area; this is the work closest to abstraction among the 2002 "phantasms".
