Phantasm in the moonlight
Fantasmă sub clar de lună
2002 · oil on canvas · 36 × 44 cm
A wide ravine crosses the canvas horizontally: its walls open into white and cream faces with strong brick-red accents at left and right, and dark, almost black hollows. Above, a blue-grey and greenish crest spreads across the full width in broad strokes, and the sky is a pearl-pink surface over which heavy grey clouds float in horizontal bands. Below, a yellow-ochre strip and a streak of water close the composition. The paint is thick and agitated; the light seems to come low from beneath the clouds, which explains the title — a landscape seen in a light that is neither day nor night.
