Two narrow, almost black boats lie drawn up on a pale green bank at the lower right, their gunwales drawn in firm strokes; one has its prow raised towards the viewer. The water spreads to the left as a smooth silvery green surface with horizontal reflections, and the far bank is a dark band of vegetation with ochre patches. In the distance the hills melt into a greenish-white haze, and the sky is a uniform grey surface. The whole canvas is held in a range of muted green, grey and white, the boats the only dark accents — an almost monochrome picture built on close tones.
