Shore 1 / Seascape 2 / Phantasm of the White Ravine
Țărm 1 / Marina 2 / Fantasma râpei albe
1990 · oil on canvas, 33 × 41 cm
A chalky white bank cuts the canvas diagonally from lower right to upper left, its sharp crests and black fissures marking where the ground has broken away. Beyond it at the left the water is a calm blue-grey surface, and behind rises a reddish-brown ridge. The foreground is a strip of golden ochre earth laid on with the knife in broad slabs. The sky, filling the upper third, is a bluish white rubbed horizontally. The whole work is built of thick paint applied in slices — a painting of matter, in which the white ravine acts as an accent of light rather than a form described in detail.
