A bank rises at the right of the canvas, with white and cream rocks worked with the knife and an olive-green slope above; towards the left the ground falls away and is lost in a grey haze that erases the horizon. At the foot of the bank a dark line marks the water's edge. In the lower right corner three narrow boats lie on the sand side by side, their gunwales drawn in brown and black. The sky, more than half the surface, is a cloudless pearl-grey. The light is even and cold; the boats give the only measure of scale.
