A low bank crosses the canvas diagonally from upper right to lower left, treated in broad strokes of brown, ochre, blue-grey and white, with a few thin black lines marking cracks in the ground. In the foreground a patch of carmine red, the only saturated colour, spreads at the foot of the bank. Beyond, a strip of yellow-green ground and a blue-grey crest close the middle plane; the sky, filling the upper half, is a pale, almost uniform grey. The work is nearly monochrome, and the red accent acts as an anchor for the eye.
