Phantasm through the willows at Pietriceaua
Fantasmă prin salcii la Pietriceaua
2002 · oil on canvas · 47 × 53 cm
Two trees with slender black trunks stand at the centre of the canvas, their crowns opening in short strokes of grey-green, ochre and blue through which the sky shows. Behind them a cobalt-blue stretch of water spreads horizontally, bounded by an agitated bank in which crimson and dark green accents appear. The foreground is an almost smooth cream-ochre surface, cut at the bottom by a reddish wattle fence. The sky, the upper third, is a pink-grey blanket with lighter horizontal bands. Though the motif is simple — willows on a riverbank — the treatment is free: the colour detaches from the object and becomes a weave.
