Phantasm through the apricot trees at Pietriceaua
Fantasmă prin zarzări la Pietriceaua
2002 · oil on canvas · 47 × 55 cm
Two trees with white leaning trunks spread broad crowns across the whole upper part of the canvas; the foliage is built from patches of cobalt blue, carmine red, grey and cream applied in short strokes that leave intervals of bare ground. Below them runs a wattle fence drawn in thin vertical lines, and the foreground is a smooth golden-ochre strip. At the right rises a dense emerald hill; at the left the ground opens into a cream zone with barely suggested forms. Two bright red accents at the bottom act as anchors. The colour is the boldest in the 2002 series: complementaries are set side by side without transition.
